全長はおよそ20cmになります。スズキ目カゴカキダイ科に属する沿岸性の魚類で、東インド・西太平洋の温帯域に分布しています。日本では青森から九州までの沿岸に生息し、岩礁域や藻場、港湾周辺の浅海で群れを成して生活します。体は体高が高く、著しく側扁しており、吻先はやや尖っています。体色は黄淡色から銀白色で、体側には暗色の縦帯が5本、やや斜めに走るのが特徴です。この縞模様に由来して、英名では「Stripey」と呼ばれています。

食性は雑食性で、小型の甲殻類や多毛類、軟体動物のほか、藻類も摂取します。産卵期は地域差がありますが、日本では春から初夏にかけてとされ、浮性卵を産むことが知られています。カゴカキダイ科Microcanthidaeは4属5種が知られていますが、近年ではイスズミ科Kyphosidaeの亜科として扱われることが多く、将来的に独立した科としての位置づけが見直される可能性も指摘されています。

和名の由来は、後頭部から背びれ起部にかけて盛り上がった体形が、江戸時代の「駕籠かき」の肩や筋肉隆々とした体つきを連想させることによります。大型魚ではなく雑魚の部類とされがちですが、白身で上品な味わいを持ち、地域によっては食用として親しまれる、知る人ぞ知る美味な魚です。

The stripey reaches a total length of about 20 cm. It is a coastal fish belonging to the order Perciformes and the family Microcanthidae, and is distributed in temperate regions of the Indo–West Pacific. In Japan, it occurs along coastal waters from Aomori to Kyushu, inhabiting shallow areas such as rocky reefs, seaweed beds, and harbor environments, where it lives in schools. The body is deep and strongly laterally compressed, with a slightly pointed snout. Body coloration ranges from pale yellow to silvery white, and five dark vertical bands run obliquely along the sides. This distinctive striped pattern is the origin of its English name, “Stripey.”

The species is omnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans, polychaete worms, mollusks, and algae. Although the spawning season varies regionally, in Japan it generally occurs from spring to early summer, and the species is known to produce pelagic eggs. The family Microcanthidae is known to comprise four genera and five species; however, in recent years it has often been treated as a subfamily within the sea chub family Kyphosidae. As a result, its status as an independent family may be revised in the future.

The Japanese name Kagokakidai derives from the resemblance of the raised body profile from the back of the head to the origin of the dorsal fin to the broad shoulders and muscular build of a kagokaki, a palanquin bearer of the Edo period. Although it is not a large fish and is often regarded as a minor species, it has firm, delicate white flesh and is considered a flavorful food fish in some regions, appreciated by those familiar with it.
