Heteroconger hassi (Klausewitz et Eibl-Eibesfeldt, 1959)

More Than Half of Its Body Lies Beneath the Sand

Growing to about 35 cm in length, the Spotted Garden Eel is distributed throughout the tropical Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It inhabits sandy bottoms around coral reefs and other areas with moderate to strong currents. Its gray body is covered with numerous black spots. The orange-and-white striped eel often mistaken for this species is actually the Splendid Garden Eel, a closely related but distinct species.

The Japanese name Chin-anago comes from its resemblance to the face of the Japanese Chin dog. More than half of its slender body remains buried in the sand, with the tail firmly anchored inside its burrow. This lifestyle is an adaptation that allows the eel to feed efficiently while remaining protected from predators. At the slightest sign of danger, it instantly retreats into its burrow and cautiously emerges again once the threat has passed.

Its diet consists mainly of zooplankton carried by ocean currents. Stretching its body into the water column, it snaps up drifting prey with remarkable speed. Because of this feeding strategy, all members of a colony face the same direction toward the current, and when the current changes, the entire group turns together. The sight of hundreds of eels swaying in unison resembles underwater plants waving in the flow, making them one of the most fascinating inhabitants of coral reefs.

While most conger eels are nocturnal, both the Spotted Garden Eel and the Splendid Garden Eel are active during the day. They spend daylight hours feeding and retreat into their burrows to rest at night. Although they may appear to be simple fish hiding in the sand, their ability to exploit ocean currents for feeding while instantly escaping from danger represents a remarkable adaptation to life on sandy seabeds. Their charming appearance has also made them one of the most popular attractions in aquariums around the world.
