血液型のRhはアカゲザルに由来する
The Rh blood type comes from rhesus monkeys
頭胴長47 – 64cm、体重5 – 9kg。ニホンザルに似ていますが、約20 – 30cmの尾があります。アフガニスタンからインド北部、中国南部にかけて生息しており、アカゲザルは基本的にメスを中心とした群れで生活しています。ニホンザルと同様にオスは大人になると生まれた群れを離れて、他の群れに移動します。
維持が比較的容易で、入手が容易で、解剖学的にも生理学的にも人間に近いため、実験動物として利用されることも多く、1959年にリスザルと共に霊長類として最初に宇宙飛行を行ないました。ちなみにRh式血液型の「Rh」は、アカゲザルの実験から発見されたことに因み、英名の頭文字からつけられました。
さて、日本には元々生息していなかったアカゲザルですが、1995年に房総半島南端部で野生化しているのが確認されました。もともとはペットあるいは動物園、観光施設等で飼育されていた個体が逃げ出したり、放されたりしたものと考えられています。2005年には特定外来生物に指定して防除を行なっていますが、ニホンザルと遺伝子的に近いために交雑することで遺伝子汚染の問題が広がっています。
They measure 47-64cm in head-body length and weigh 5-9kg. They resemble Japanese macaques, but have tails of approximately 20-30cm. Found from Afghanistan to northern India and southern China, rhesus macaques generally live in female-dominated groups. Like Japanese macaques, males leave their natal group and move to other groups upon reaching adulthood.
Because they are relatively easy to care for and obtain, and similar in anatomical and physiological characteristics to humans, rhesus macaques are often used as experimental animals. In 1959, they became the first primates to fly in space, along with squirrel monkeys. Incidentally, the Rh blood type system, “Rh,” was named after the initials of its English name, as it was discovered through experiments with rhesus monkeys.
While rhesus macaques were not native to Japan, they were spotted in the wild at the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula in 1995. It is believed that they were originally kept as pets, or kept in zoos or tourist facilities, before escaping or being released. In 2005, they were designated as an invasive species and efforts are underway to eradicate them, but because they are genetically close to Japanese macaques, they are interbreeding, causing widespread problems of genetic contamination.
