カンガルーはどうやって泳ぐ？
How do kangaroos swim?

体長約1ｍ、尾長0.7 – 0.8ｍ。オーストラリア南東部とタスマニアに分布する中型のカンガルーです。灰色の体色で首から肩にかけて橙褐色に色付くのが特徴です。開けた森林、乾燥したユーカリ林、草原、牧草地などに生息し、日中は休んでいることが多く、夕暮れになると行動を始め、草やハーブ、根などを採食します。水分が不足する乾季の間、根は彼らの主要な水源になります。

カンガルーは飛び跳ねたりジャンプが得意ですが、実は泳ぐこともできます。ではどうやって泳ぐのでしょうか？地上では両足を揃えてジャンプするのが常ですが、水中では足を交互に動かしてパドリングしているのです。そして長い尾は鞭打つように左右に動かして推進力を得ます。多くの哺乳類のように脚を交互に動かして移動する機能は先祖代々カンガルーにも受け継がれていて、例えばキノボリカンガルーは木を登る際に脚を前後に動かすのを見ることができます。

カンガルーはオーストラリアの固有種ですが、本種はニュージーランド、イギリス（イングランドとスコットランド、マン島）、アイルランド、フランス、ドイツなどの国や地域に移入されています。それらの多くは動物園から脱走して繁殖した個体です。得意のジャンプ力で柵を飛び越えたのでしょうか。欧州の厳寒の冬を生き延びて繁殖する適応能力の高さには驚かされます。

It is a medium-sized kangaroo (wallaby) that is found in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Its body is grey with an orange-brown colouring from its neck to its shoulders. It inhabits open forests, dry eucalyptus forests, grasslands and pastures, and often rests during the day. It becomes active at dusk, feeding on grass, herbs and roots. During the dry season, when water is scarce, roots are their main source of water.

Kangaroos are good at hopping and jumping, but they can also swim. So how do they swim? On land, they usually jump with both feet together, but in the water, they paddle by moving their feet alternately. They also move their long tail from side to side like a whip to gain propulsion. The ability to move by moving their legs alternately like many mammals has been passed down to kangaroos from generation to generation, and for example, tree kangaroos can be seen moving their legs back and forth when climbing trees.

Kangaroos are endemic to Australia, but they have been introduced to countries and regions such as New Zealand, the UK (England, Scotland, and the Isle of Man), Ireland, France, and Germany. Many of these escapees are from zoos and have bred. Perhaps they used their excellent jumping ability to jump over the fences. It is amazing how well they adapt, surviving the harsh European winters and breeding.
