甲長約40cm、体重16kg。マダガスカルに固有のリクガメであり、甲羅が高く盛り上がり、放射状の黄色い模様が入ることが特徴です。世界一美しいカメと呼ばれ、ペットとして人気です。人為的に持ち込まれたモーリシャス島やユニオン島で繁殖し生息していますが、原産地であるマダガスカル島では密輸や乱獲、自然破壊などにより、数が減少しています。
とても長寿のカメで、通常40年生きます。知られている最長寿のホウシャガメは1777年にジェームズ・クック船長からトンガ王室に贈られたとされる「トゥイ・マリラ」という名のカメです。1966年に亡くなるまで推定188歳生きました。死去時のロイター発のニュースはフィリップ・K・ディックのSF小説『アンドロイドは電気羊の夢を見るか？』の序文に引用されており、歴史的名作にインスピレーションを与えたと考えられます。生前は雄だと信じられていましたが、死後にニュージーランドのオークランド戦争記念博物館に移され調査が行われ、雌であることが分かりました。
トンガ語で「マリラの王」という意味の「トゥイ・マリラ」は、食用として入手され、クックの船の乗組員からトンガに贈られたという説もあります。馬に蹴られ、車輪に轢かれることで甲羅は傷つき、晩年は失火により盲目となりながらも人間よりも遥かに長い年月を生きながらえました。トンガ王室で飼われ、エリザベス女王にも謁見するなど数奇な運命を辿った「トゥイ・マリラ」は剥製となり、現在はトンガ国立博物館のガラスケースの中で静かな眠りに就いています。
This tortoise, endemic to Madagascar, measures approximately 40 cm in carapace length and weighs 16 kg. Its distinctive, high-profile shell features a radial yellow pattern. It’s considered the most beautiful tortoise in the world and a popular pet. It was introduced artificially to Mauritius and Union Island, where it thrives. However, its native Madagascar population has declined due to smuggling, overfishing, and environmental destruction.
It is an extremely long-lived tortoise, typically living for 40 years. The longest-lived known radiated tortoise is a tortoise named “Tu’i Malila” said to have been gifted to the Royal Family of Tonga by Captain James Cook in 1777. It lived to an estimated 188 years old before its death in 1966. The Reuters news of its death was quoted in the preface of Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, likely inspiring the landmark novel. It was believed to be a male during its lifetime, but after its death it was moved to the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand and examined, where it was determined to be a female.
Tu’i Malila, which means “King of Malila” in Tongan, is said to have been obtained for food and given to Tonga by the crew of Cook’s ship. Its shell was damaged by being kicked by a horse and run over by a wheel, and it became blind in a fire in its later years, but it still managed to live far longer than humans. After a strange fate that included being kept by the Tongan royal family and even meeting Queen Elizabeth, Tui Malila was stuffed and now rests peacefully in a glass case at the Tonga National Museum.
