Chicks That Survive in the Extreme Cold

ペンギンの中ではコウテイペンギンに次ぐ大きさで、体長は85〜95cm、体重は14〜18kgあります。全体の姿はコウテイペンギンによく似ていますが、くちばし下部や側頭部、胸の上部にかけて広がる鮮やかなオレンジ色が特徴で、この色彩の違いによって見分けることができます。

ペンギンといえば南極の厳しい氷原に暮らす印象がありますが、現在知られている18種のペンギンのうち、南極大陸そのものに繁殖地を持つのはコウテイペンギンとアデリーペンギンのみです。オウサマペンギンは南極大陸周辺の亜南極帯に位置する島々で集団繁殖を行います。

繁殖にはおよそ1年を要します。巣は作らず、産まれた卵を足の上に載せ、雌雄が交代で腹部の抱卵斑によって温めます。卵は約54日で孵化し、その後、親鳥はヒナが冬の寒さを乗り越えられるよう、海で餌を採っては繁殖地へ戻り、胃の中で半消化した餌を吐き戻して口移しで与えます。生後5〜6週間ほどでヒナは親元を離れ、「クレイシ（仏語で保育園の意）」と呼ばれるヒナの集団の中で生活します。多数のヒナが密集するクレイシの中で自分の子を見つけるため、親子は互いの声を記憶し、鳴き交わすことで再会します。

冬の厳しい寒さと餌不足の時期を乗り越えたヒナは春を迎え、成長とともに褐色の幼羽から成鳥の羽毛へと換羽し、やがて独り立ちしていきます。

The king penguin is the second largest penguin species after the emperor penguin, measuring 85–95 cm in height and weighing 14–18 kg. Its overall appearance closely resembles that of the emperor penguin; however, it can be distinguished by the vivid orange coloration that spreads across the lower bill, the sides of the head, and the upper chest.

Penguins are often associated with the frozen landscapes of Antarctica, yet among the 18 recognized penguin species, only the emperor penguin and the Adélie penguin breed on the Antarctic continent itself. King penguins instead form large breeding colonies on subantarctic islands surrounding Antarctica.

Breeding takes approximately one year. King penguins do not build nests; instead, the egg is balanced on the feet and incubated alternately by the male and female using a brood patch on the lower abdomen. After about 54 days, the egg hatches. The parents then forage at sea and return to the colony to feed the chick by regurgitating partially digested food stored in the stomach, ensuring the chick can survive the harsh winter conditions. At around five to six weeks of age, chicks leave their parents and gather in groups known as a crèche (a term derived from French meaning “nursery”). Within these densely packed groups, parents locate their own chicks by recognizing and responding to each other’s unique calls.

After enduring the severe cold and periods of food scarcity through the winter, the chicks reach spring. As temperatures rise and food supply becomes more stable, the growing chicks molt from their brown juvenile down into adult plumage and eventually fledge, beginning an independent life.
