クモザルにも心がある？
Do spider monkeys have conscious minds?

体長30 – 65cm、尾長63 – 85cm、体重6 – 9kg。中央アメリカに生息するクモザルの仲間です。クモザルは腕が足より長く、手足よりも更に長いのが尾で、5本目の手足のように使うことができます。尾の先端には毛がなくパッドになっています。パッドに刻まれた指紋のようなシワ「尾紋」には触感があり、滑り止めの効果もあります。しっぽだけで木の枝にぶら下がることができ、その姿が糸にぶら下がるクモに似ていることから「Spider monkey 」の名前がつけられました。さらによく観察すると手の指が4本しかないことがわかります。実は親指が退化していて、これは木と木を素早く移動するためだと言われています。

ジェフロイクモザルは全体的に黒褐色、腹部は淡色の毛で覆われていて、目の周りは肌が露出します。彼らは新世界のサル（広鼻小目）の中で最大種です。また、ゴリラよりも高い知能を持っており、霊長類の中ではチンパンジー、オランウータンに次ぎ３番目です。高い能力があるか調べる実験に鏡を向けた際に映る姿を自分だと認識できるか調べるミラーテストがありますが、ジェフロイクモザルは前述の霊長類と共に自己認識することができるグループの仲間に入ります。他の動物ではイルカ、ゾウ、カラスなどが自己認識することができますが、意外なところではホンソメワケベラという魚にも備わっていることが最近の研究でわかっています。自己認識は意識（心）を持つことになり、他者の思考や行動を想像する能力を持つことに繋がります。ジェフロイクモザルが実際に心を持っているのかはわかりませんが、時折見せる表情には憂いを感じさせます。

Body length 30-65cm, tail length 63-85cm, weight 6-9kg. It is a member of the spider monkey family that inhabits Central America. Spider monkeys have arms longer than their legs, and even longer tails than their limbs, which they can use like a fifth limb. The tip of the tail is padded and hairless. Fingerprint-like wrinkles on the pad have a tactile feel and also act as a slip-proofing agent. They can hang from tree branches using only their tails, and their appearance resembles that of a spider hanging from a thread, hence the name “Spider monkey”. If you look closely, you will see that they only have four fingers on their hands. In fact, their thumbs have degenerated, which is said to be to allow them to move quickly between trees.
Geoffroy’s spider monkeys are black-brown overall, with light-colored hair covering their abdomens, and the skin around their eyes is exposed. They are the largest species of New World monkeys (Platyrrhines). They are also more intelligent than gorillas, and are third among primates after chimpanzees and orangutans. One experiment to test whether a person has high abilities is the mirror test, which tests whether the individual can recognize themselves when they see their reflection in a mirror. Geoffroy’s spider monkeys, along with the aforementioned primates, belong to the group of animals that can recognize themselves. Other animals that can recognize themselves include dolphins, elephants, and crows, but recent research has revealed that a fish called the cleaner wrasse is also capable of this ability. Self-awareness leads to having consciousness (a mind), which leads to the ability to imagine the thoughts and actions of others. It is not known whether Geoffroy’s spider monkeys actually have minds, but the expressions they sometimes show seem sad.
