体長は 2〜3m、最大で 4m に達します。オーストラリア東部に生息するカーペットニシキヘビの亜種で、ニシキヘビとしては中型に分類され、雄よりも雌のほうが大きくなる傾向があります。オーストラリアには 210 種以上のヘビが生息し、その約 80％を毒ヘビが占めていますが、ニシキヘビ類は 15 種ほどしかおらず、無毒の少数派です。
カーペットニシキヘビの主な食性はネズミやラットなどの小型哺乳類で、時にペットの鳥や小動物を捕食した例も報告されています。獲物には巻きついて呼吸を止め、その後に丸呑みにします。ペットとしても流通しており、通常は大人しい性質ですが、恐怖を感じると噛むことがあるため取り扱いには注意が必要です。
彼らの本来の棲みかは森林や草原などの自然環境ですが、時折住居に侵入して人を驚かせることがあります。水を求めて侵入したのか、トイレ内で発見された例も知られています。そのため、オーストラリアにはヘビ駆除を専門とする業者が複数あり、ライセンスを持った捕獲者が 24 時間体制で対応し、捕獲したヘビを別の場所へ移動（リロケーション）しています。南東クイーンズランド州の業者によれば、温暖な季節には 1 日に最大 10 頭を移送することもあり、依頼件数は増加傾向にあるとされています。
The Coastal Carpet Python reaches 2–3 meters in length and can grow up to 4 meters at maximum. It is a subspecies of the Carpet Python inhabiting eastern Australia and is considered medium-sized among pythons, with females generally growing larger than males. Australia is home to more than 210 snake species, about 80 percent of which are venomous, whereas pythons number only around 15 species and represent a small, non-venomous minority.
This species mainly feeds on small mammals such as mice and rats, and there are occasional reports of individuals preying on pet birds or other small domestic animals. Coastal Carpet Pythons subdue their prey by constricting and suffocating it before swallowing it whole. They are also kept as pets and are usually calm in temperament, but they may bite when they feel threatened, so careful handling is required.
Although their natural habitat consists of forests and grasslands away from human settlements, they sometimes enter houses and startle residents. Some individuals have even been found hiding in toilets, likely in search of water. As a result, Australia has several licensed snake-removal services that operate around the clock, capturing snakes and relocating them to safer areas. According to a handler in south-east Queensland, up to ten snakes may be relocated in a single day during the warmer months, and call-out numbers appear to be increasing.
