Shark or Ray? The Unusual Giant of Tropical Seas
シノノメサカタザメは、体長2.7m、体重135kgにも達する大型の軟骨魚類です。インド太平洋の熱帯域に広く分布し、沿岸部や大陸棚周辺の水深70mほどまでの砂地や浅海域に生息しています。エラ孔が腹側にあることからエイの仲間に分類されますが、後半部はサメのように細長く伸びた体形をしており、英名「Bowmouth guitarfish（弓形の口を持つギターフィッシュ）」の由来にもなっています。分類上はサカタザメ目に属し、前半部はエイ、後半部はサメを思わせる独特な姿を持つ魚です。
頭部は幅広く、吻の周囲や背面には多数の大きなトゲが並びます。この頑丈な外見は外敵への防御に役立つと考えられていますが、一方で人間による利用の対象にもなっています。肉は食用として評価が高く、ヒレはフカヒレとして高値で取引されます。さらに頭部のトゲは装飾品の素材として利用され、一部地域ではリングやブレスレットなどに加工されて販売されています。
こうした需要の高さから乱獲が続き、生息数は急激に減少しました。近年の調査では、地域によってはこの数十年で個体数が80%以上減少したと推定されており、国際自然保護連合（IUCN）では絶滅危惧IA類（CR）に指定されています。2019年にはワシントン条約（CITES）付属書IIに掲載され、国際取引に規制が設けられましたが、現在も違法取引は完全には無くなっていません。大型で特徴的な姿を持つこの魚は、海洋生態系を象徴する存在であると同時に、人間活動の影響を強く受けている種でもあります。

The bowmouth guitarfish is a large cartilaginous fish that can reach 2.7 meters in length and weigh up to 135 kilograms. It is distributed throughout tropical regions of the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting coastal waters and continental shelves at depths of up to around 70 meters. Although it belongs to the rays, as indicated by its gill openings located on the underside of the body, its elongated rear body resembles that of a shark. This unique appearance is reflected in its English name, “bowmouth guitarfish.” Classified within the order Rhinopristiformes, it possesses a distinctive body shape that appears intermediate between sharks and rays.
Its broad head is covered with numerous large thorn-like projections around the snout and across the back. While these structures likely serve as protection against predators, they have also made the species valuable to humans. Its meat is considered high quality, and its fins are traded for shark fin products. In some regions, the head spines are additionally used for ornaments such as rings and bracelets.
Because of this high commercial demand, the species has suffered severe overfishing and population declines. Surveys suggest that populations in some areas have decreased by more than 80 percent over recent decades, leading the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to classify the species as Critically Endangered (CR). In 2019, it was added to Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), placing restrictions on international trade. However, illegal trade still continues. With its striking appearance and vulnerable status, the bowmouth guitarfish has become a symbol of the growing impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.
They are able to retract their eyes up to 1.6 inches (about 4 cm) into their heads.
