敵を欺く術を持つ海の忍者
A sea ninja with the ability to deceive his enemies

胴長は約40 – 45cmで、広くは西太平洋からインド洋まで、日本沿岸では北海道から沖縄まで生息します。日本では食用として美味で高級な寿司ネタとしても人気があります。

多くの頭足類と同様、色素胞と呼ばれる色素沈着した皮膚細胞を制御して、体の色や模様を急速に変化させることができます。またインク嚢もあり、黒いインクの雲を放出して捕食者を混乱させることができます。敵を欺き素早く動く様はまるで忍者のようです。

近年の研究で３種類に分類されることが分かり、アカイカ、シロイカ、クワイカと呼んで区別しています。中でもアカイカは大きいもので５kgにも成長するので「レッドモンスター」として釣り人にも親しまれており、いつかは釣ってみたいと思う憧れの存在です。

With a body length of about 40-45cm, it is found widely from the Western Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean, and along the coast of Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. In Japan, it is a delicious food and is popular as a high-quality sushi topping.

Like many cephalopods, they can control pigmented skin cells called chromatophores to rapidly change color and pattern, and they also have ink sacs that can release clouds of black ink to confuse predators. They have the ability to deceive their enemies and their swift movements are like those of a ninja.

Recent research has revealed that they are divided into three types: red squid, white squid, and shortfin squid. Among them, the largest red squid can grow to 5kg, so it is affectionately known as the “red monster” by anglers, and is an object of desire that many would like to catch someday.
