体長は25〜30cmほど。アフリカ南東部から日本、オーストラリアに至るインド太平洋域に広く分布する沿岸性の魚です。全身は銀白色で、尾鰭には旗のように並ぶ5本の黒色帯があり、比較的大きな目とともに本種を見分ける特徴となっています。サンゴ礁や岩礁域、河口の汽水域に生息し、幼魚は潮だまり（タイドプール）でも観察されます。小規模な群れをつくって行動し、夜行性で、動物プランクトンや小魚、甲殻類などを捕食します。
ギンユゴイが属するユゴイ科は、ユゴイ属1属のみからなり、現在13種が知られています。代表的な種であるユゴイ Kuhlia marginata の和名「湯鯉」は、静岡県伊東周辺での呼び名に由来し、温泉の湧出によって水温が高くなった汽水の池沼に生息していたことにちなみます。ユゴイの仲間には、オオクチユゴイ Kuhlia rupestris のように淡水域へ進出した種もいますが、ギンユゴイは淡水域で確認されることはほとんどありません。
日本では茨城県以南の太平洋側沿岸、対馬、九州北部、南西諸島などに分布します。食用とされることは稀ですが、特徴的な体色と模様を持つことから、水族館で飼育・展示されることもあります。
The Silver Kuhlia reaches a total length of approximately 25–30 cm and is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from southeastern Africa to Japan and Australia. Its body is silvery in color, and the caudal fin bears five distinct black bands arranged like a flag, a key feature for identification. The species also has relatively large eyes. It inhabits coral reefs, rocky shores, and brackish waters near river mouths, while juveniles are often found in tide pools. Individuals usually form small groups and are nocturnal, feeding primarily on zooplankton, small fishes, and crustaceans.
The family Kuhliidae consists of a single genus, Kuhlia, which currently includes 13 recognized species. The representative species Kuhlia marginata is known in Japanese as “Yugoi,” a name originating from the Ito area of Shizuoka Prefecture. This name refers to its occurrence in brackish ponds and wetlands warmed by natural hot spring inflows. While some members of the genus, such as the Jungle Perch Kuhlia rupestris, have expanded into freshwater habitats, Kuhlia mugil is rarely found in freshwater environments.
In Japan, the Silver Kuhlia occurs along the Pacific coast south of Ibaraki Prefecture, as well as around Tsushima Island, northern Kyushu, and the Ryukyu Islands. Although it is seldom used as a food fish, its distinctive appearance makes it a species occasionally displayed in public aquaria.
