全長はオス55〜65cm、メス45〜50cmです。コサンケイはキジ科に属するベトナム固有の鳥で、ベトナム中部から北部の標高約600m前後の湿潤な低地林に生息しています。オスは青みを帯びた光沢のある暗色の羽毛をもち、メスは褐色で全身に細かな斑が入ります。雌雄ともに眼の周囲の裸出部と脚が赤いのが特徴です。
本種は20世紀後半、農地開発や森林伐採に加え、ベトナム戦争における除草剤散布の影響によって生息地が大きく失われ、一時は野生で絶滅したと考えられていました。その後1997年に再発見されましたが、2000年以降は確実な観察例がほとんどなく、現在も極めて危機的な状況にあります。現在動物園などで見られる個体の多くは、野生個体が激減する前の1920〜30年代に採集された少数の個体をもとに、人の手で繁殖されてきた飼育個体群に由来しています。
また、1975年にコサンケイの亜種として記載された「ベトナムキジ」は、オスの尾羽の一部が白くなる特徴に基づいて区別されました。しかしその後の形態比較や遺伝子解析により、この違いは種や亜種を分ける決定的なものではなく、コサンケイ内に見られる変異であることが明らかになりました。特に小さく孤立した個体群では近親交配の影響によってこうした特徴が現れやすいと考えられており、現在では独立した分類群とは認められず、本種に含まれる変異型として扱われています。
A variant once known as the Vietnamese Pheasant, characterized by partially white tail feathers
The male measures 55–65 cm in total length, while the female is 45–50 cm. Edwards’s Pheasant is a member of the family Phasianidae and is endemic to Vietnam, inhabiting humid lowland forests at elevations of around 600 meters in central to northern regions of the country. Males have glossy, dark plumage with a bluish sheen, whereas females are brown with fine mottling. In both sexes, the bare skin around the eyes and the legs are red.
During the latter half of the 20th century, the species suffered severe habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, deforestation, and herbicide use during the Vietnam War, and it was once thought to be extinct in the wild. It was rediscovered in 1997, but there have been very few confirmed records since 2000, and the species remains in a critically endangered state. Most individuals currently seen in zoos originate from captive populations bred by humans from a small number of birds collected in the 1920s and 1930s, before the drastic decline of wild populations.
The so-called Vietnamese Pheasant, described in 1975 as a subspecies of Edwards’s Pheasant, was distinguished by the presence of partially white tail feathers in males. However, subsequent morphological and genetic studies have shown that this difference does not represent a valid taxonomic distinction, but rather falls within the range of variation of Edwards’s Pheasant. Such traits are likely the result of inbreeding in small, isolated populations. It is therefore no longer recognized as a distinct taxon and is now treated as a variant form within the species.
