インドネシアのタニンバル群島固有種であり、他には移入種としてシンガポールにも生息しており、森林公園や住宅近くの薄樹林でも見かけることがあります。頭から尾の先までの全長は約30cmで、オウムの仲間の中では小型の部類です。全身が白く、クチバシの周りは薄いピンク色です。冠羽は閉じたり開いたり動かすことができます。
ところでオウムを意味する英語にはcockatooとparrotがありますが、その違いはどこにあるのでしょうか。cockatooとは冠羽のある(一般に羽毛の白い)オウムのことで，本種やキバタン、コバタン、の他にオカメインコ、モモイロインコ等を含みます。主に中型、小型種が多く、フィリピン、インドネシアからオーストラリアにかけて生息しています。parrotは広義の意味でオウム科Psittacidaeのことを指し、狭義の意味ではコンゴウインコに代表される熱帯域生息のカラフルな羽を持つ大型種のことです。
オウムは人の言葉を真似することができる頭の良い鳥です。特に本種は知能が高く、飼育下の実験にて、道具を使ったり、餌を混ぜて味付けを変えたりすることがわかっています。また、愛情深い性格で、飼い主と強い絆を結ぶことができます。ただし非常に喧しいので甲高い声の騒音に対して寛容である必要があります。
It is endemic to the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia, and is also an introduced species that lives in Singapore, where it can be seen in forest parks and thin forests near residential areas. Its total length from head to tail is about 30 cm, making it a small parrot. Its entire body is white, with a light pink beak. Its crest can be opened and closed and moved.
By the way, what is the difference between a cockatoo and a parrot? A cockatoo is the Psittaciformes with a crest (usually white feathers), and includes this species, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, the Lesser Yellow-capped Cockatoo, the Cockatiel, the Galah, and others. Most of them are medium-sized and small, and they live from the Philippines and Indonesia to Australia.
Parrot in a broad sense refers to the Psittacidae family, and in a narrow sense refers to a large tropical species with colorful feathers, such as the Scarlet Macaw.
Cockatoos are intelligent birds that can imitate human speech. This species is particularly intelligent, and captive experiments have shown that it uses tools and mixes its food to change the flavor. It is also affectionate and can form strong bonds with its owner. However, it is very noisy, so you need to be tolerant of the high-pitched noise.
