Basking in the Sun, Then Back into the Water
Distributed from southern New Guinea to northern Australia, the Red-bellied Short-necked Turtle is a freshwater turtle that inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, wetlands, and other aquatic environments. Its carapace can reach about 26 cm in length, with females generally growing larger than males. Males, however, have longer tails, which can help distinguish the sexes.
One of the species’ most distinctive features is the vivid coloration on its underside, from which its common name is derived. Juveniles have orange to pink coloration around the plastron and edges of the shell, but this gradually fades as they mature, taking on a salmon-pink hue. Pale longitudinal stripes run along the head, giving the turtle a striking facial appearance against its dark shell.
It spends much of its time in water and is an omnivore with a strong preference for animal prey, feeding mainly on fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and mollusks, while also consuming aquatic plants and algae. Its powerful jaws can crush prey with hard shells. Although it searches for food underwater, it also climbs onto fallen logs and rocks along the water’s edge to bask in the sun.
Moving between water and land is not simply a matter of resting. Like other turtles, this species is ectothermic and cannot maintain a constant body temperature on its own. By basking in the sun, it warms its body and regulates its temperature to a level suitable for activity. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation also enables the skin to synthesize vitamin D₃, which plays an important role in the utilization of calcium. For a turtle that spends so much of its life in water, basking in the sunlight is therefore an essential behavior for maintaining its body and continuing its aquatic life.
