A Popular Goldfish Refined Through Selective Breeding

オランダ獅子頭（Oranda）は、中国で作出された金魚の一品種で、琉金の中から頭部に肉瘤（にくりゅう）が発達した個体を選抜・固定化して成立しました。日本へは江戸時代に渡来し、当時数少ない交易国であったオランダにちなんで「オランダ」と名付けられました。獅子頭の名は、発達した肉瘤が獅子のたてがみを思わせることに由来します。

本種は金魚の中でも大型になりやすく、良好な環境では全長20〜25cmに達します。体型は産地によって差があり、日本で改良された細身で流線型の「長手型」と、中国系に多い体高が高く丸みの強い「丸手型」に大別されます。長手型は約200年前に輸入された系統をもとに四国や西日本で維持・改良されてきたもので、現在では品評会で評価される高級金魚として知られます。一方、丸手型は流通量が多く、比較的入手しやすい品種です。さらに、長手型の大型個体同士を交配して固定化した「ジャンボ獅子頭」も知られています。

オランダ獅子頭は中国や日本にとどまらず、台湾、タイ、マレーシア、シンガポール、インドネシアなどアジア各地で盛んに改良され、肉瘤の形状や体色、尾の開き方に多様な表現が生み出されています。肉瘤は成長とともに発達し、水質や栄養状態の影響を受けやすいため、飼育環境がその美しさを大きく左右する点も本種の大きな特徴です。

The Oranda is a variety of goldfish that was developed in China. It originated from Ryukin-type goldfish, in which individuals with a pronounced fleshy growth (wen) on the head were selectively bred and stabilized. The variety was introduced to Japan during the Edo period and was named “Oranda,” meaning Holland, after one of the few countries engaged in trade with Japan at the time. The name “Shishigashira” (lionhead) refers to the wen, which resembles a lion’s mane.

This variety tends to grow relatively large among goldfish, reaching 20–25 cm in total length under favorable conditions. Body shape varies by lineage and region, and is broadly classified into two types: the slender, streamlined “nagate” type developed in Japan, and the deeper-bodied, more rounded “marute” type commonly seen in Chinese strains. The nagate type descends from stock imported about 200 years ago and has been selectively bred in regions such as Shikoku and western Japan; today it is highly valued in competitive exhibitions. In contrast, the marute type is widely available and generally more affordable. A distinct strain known as the “Jumbo Oranda” has also been established by selectively breeding particularly large individuals of the nagate type.

Orandas are bred not only in China and Japan but also across many parts of Asia, including Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. As a result, a wide range of variations has emerged in the shape of the wen, body coloration, and tail form. The wen continues to develop as the fish grows and is highly influenced by water quality and nutrition, making proper care a key factor in maintaining the fish’s ornamental appeal.
