中世ヨーロッパの「王の鳥」
The “King’s Bird” of Medieval Europe
コブハクチョウ Mute Swan は、ヨーロッパ西部から中央アジア、モンゴル、シベリア南部にかけて分布する大型の水鳥です。全長は約1.4〜1.6mに達し、純白の体と橙赤色の嘴、そして嘴の付け根にある黒いこぶが特徴です。このこぶは特にオスで大きく発達し、和名や英名の由来にもなっています。首を美しくS字に曲げて泳ぐ姿は優雅さの象徴として知られ、白鳥類を代表する存在として世界的に親しまれています。
古代ローマ時代にはすでに飼育が行われ、中世ヨーロッパでは「王の鳥」として貴族や王侯に愛されました。現在でも城館や公園の池で飼育されることが多く、西洋文化において特別な存在となっています。英名の “Mute Swan” は、「死ぬ間際にだけ美しい声で歌う」という“スワン・ソング”の伝説にちなみ、「普段は寡黙なハクチョウ」という意味で名付けられました。しかし実際には全く鳴かないわけではなく、威嚇時の低い声や鼻を鳴らすような声を発します。また、飛翔時には大きな風切り音を響かせることでも知られています。
童話『みにくいアヒルの子』の作者ハンス・クリスチャン・アンデルセンの母国デンマークでは国鳥に指定されています。一方、日本には本来分布しない外来種であり、1952年に皇居外苑の壕へ放鳥された個体を起源として、各地の湖沼や公園に定着しました。城の堀や都市公園で優雅に泳ぐ姿は親しまれる一方、水田の苗を食害するなど農業被害も報告されており、生態系への影響が懸念されています。
The Mute Swan is a large waterbird distributed across western Europe, Central Asia, Mongolia, and southern Siberia. It reaches a length of about 1.4–1.6 meters and is distinguished by its pure white plumage, orange-red bill, and the black knob at the base of the bill. This knob is especially prominent in males and is the origin of both its Japanese and English names. With its long neck gracefully curved into an S-shape while swimming, the species has become one of the most familiar and iconic swans in the world.
The species had already been kept in captivity during the time of ancient Rome, and in medieval Europe it was admired by nobles and royalty as the “King’s Bird.” Even today, it is commonly seen in the ponds of castles and parks, where it remains a symbol of elegance in Western culture. The English name “Mute Swan” comes from the old legend of the “swan song,” which claimed that swans sing beautifully only just before death. In reality, however, the species is not truly silent and can produce various calls, including low hissing or snorting sounds when threatened. It is also known for the loud wingbeats heard during flight.
In Denmark, the homeland of Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Ugly Duckling, the Mute Swan is designated as the national bird. Although not native to Japan, the species was introduced there, beginning with birds released into the Imperial Palace moats in 1952, and has since established populations in lakes and parks throughout the country. While admired for its graceful appearance in castle moats and urban parks, it has also caused agricultural damage by feeding on rice seedlings, raising concerns about its impact on local ecosystems.
