姿なき森の声
The Hidden Voice of the Forest
体長約50cm、翼長25～30cm。サギの仲間で、夏鳥として日本で繁殖し、冬はフィリピンや台湾で越冬します。標高1,000m以下の平地から低山地にかけての森林に生息します。春の里山では、日没後に喉を大きく膨らませ、低い声で「ブ・ウォー、ブ・ウォー」と鳴く姿が見られます。
この独特の鳴き声は、雄がなわばりを主張し、雌を呼ぶためのアピールです。その声から、古くは「ウメキドリ」「ヤマイボ」「ウシドリ」などの別名でも呼ばれてきました。なお、「ミゾゴイ」という名は、“溝（水の流れるところ）に棲む五位鷺（ゴイサギ）”の意に由来します。
ゴイサギ（Nycticorax nycticorax）はミゾゴイよりひとまわり大きく、幼鳥の姿がミゾゴイに似ています。ミゾゴイはかつてゴイサギと同じNycticorax属に分類されていましたが、現在はGorsachius属に分けられています。これら二つの属は総称して“Night heron（夜サギ）”と呼ばれ、夜行性で不気味な声を発する特徴があります。ミゾゴイも夜に鳴くため夜行性と思われがちですが、実際には昼間に採食を行うようです。
ずんぐりした体型に見えるミゾゴイですが、首は長く伸びます。外敵が現れると首を縦にまっすぐ伸ばし、樹木に擬態する姿はユーモラスで、サギ科らしい特徴です。警戒心が強く、人前に姿を現さないミゾゴイは、このような巧みな術で身を守っているのです。
The Japanese Night Heron measures about 50 cm in body length, with a wingspan of 25–30 cm. It belongs to the heron family and breeds in Japan as a summer visitor, wintering in the Philippines and Taiwan. It inhabits forests from lowlands to foothills below 1,000 meters. In spring, one may hear its deep call, “Bu-wo, Bu-wo,” echoing through the countryside after sunset as the bird swells its throat.
This distinctive call is the male’s way of claiming territory and attracting a mate. Owing to its moaning voice, the species was once known by several old names such as Umekidori (“moaning bird”), Yamaibo, and Ushidori. The name Mizogoi literally means “five-ranked heron of the ditch,” referring to a heron dwelling near flowing water.
The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is slightly larger, and its juvenile closely resembles the Japanese Night Heron. Formerly classified in the same genus (Nycticorax), the Japanese Night Heron is now placed in Gorsachius. Together, these genera are known as Night herons, nocturnal birds noted for their eerie calls. Although the Japanese Night Heron is often assumed to be nocturnal because of its nighttime calls, it actually feeds during the day.
Though it appears stocky, the bird can stretch its neck surprisingly long. When threatened, it extends its neck vertically, mimicking a tree trunk — a humorous yet effective camouflage that reveals its heron lineage. Shy and wary, the Japanese Night Heron relies on such disguises to remain unseen in the quiet woods.
