特異な瘤を持つグラスフィッシュ
A Glassfish with a Distinctive Cranial Hump

全長約10cm。ミャンマーのアタラン川流域や、タイとの国境付近を流れるサルウィーン川流域に分布し、特に滝や急流のある澄んだ水域に生息します。2003年に新種として記載された比較的新しい魚です。

頭部には大きな瘤があり、半透明の体と発達した大きな目が特徴です。この瘤は頭部の背骨が著しく発達したもので、表面に鱗は見られません。瘤の大きさには性差があり、一般にオスの方が大きくなります。その形状がリンゴを思わせることから、和名や英名の由来となりました。

グラスフィッシュの仲間ですが、他種に比べ体の透明度はやや低く、銀色の光沢を帯びています。アクアリウムでも流通するものの、生息域が限られているため価格は高めです。一方で、独特な外見と比較的飼育しやすい性質から、近年は観賞魚としての人気が高まっています。

This species reaches a total length of about 10 cm. It is distributed in the Ataran River basin of Myanmar and the Salween River system near the border with Thailand, inhabiting clear waters with waterfalls and strong currents. It was described as a new species in 2003.

The fish is characterized by a large hump on the head, a semi-transparent body, and well-developed, prominent eyes. This hump results from an unusual development of the cranial vertebrae and lacks scales on its surface. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males typically having a larger hump. The apple-like shape of this structure is the origin of both the common and scientific names.

Although a member of the glassfish group, this species has lower body transparency than its relatives and displays a silvery sheen. It is traded in the aquarium hobby, but its limited natural distribution makes it relatively expensive. Nevertheless, its unique appearance and comparatively easy care have contributed to its growing popularity as an ornamental fish.
