「熱い思ひ」を緋色に託して
Entrusting Passion to Scarlet
体長48cm。ユーラシア大陸北部のツンドラ地帯で繁殖するカモの仲間です。越冬地は分散しており、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ北部、インド北部、東アジアなどで、日本には冬鳥として10月上旬から飛来し、3月下旬まで湖沼、河川、海岸などで見られます。全体的に体色は褐色で、特に雄は頭部が明るい赤褐色で額部はクリーム色の特徴で、他のカモと容易に区別がつきます。湖面を静かに漂いながら水草をついばむ姿は、冬の水辺の風物詩といえるでしょう。
和名は頭部の色に由来し、緋色の鳥だから「緋鳥鴨(ヒドリガモ)」と呼ばれます。色が名前に記された動物は多々ありますが緋色は珍しい例です。緋色は黄色味のある赤色のことで英語でscarletと訳されますが、その背景に込められた意味には違いがあります。
英文学では、ナサニエル・ホーソーン著『緋文字(The Scarlet Letter
)』やアーサー・C・ドイル著『緋色の研究(A Study in Scarlet)』で見られるようにscarletは罪悪の象徴です。一方、日本の緋色は高貴・熱情・生命の象徴であり、平安時代以降「燃えるような熱い思ひ」の隠喩として用いられてきました。
さて、ヒドリガモは12月頃になるとパートナー探しが始まります。雄は “フィー” という澄んだ高音（whistling）で鳴き、雌の注意を引きます。そして体をやや前傾させ、首を後ろへ弾くように大きく反らすことで自分の体色を強調するのです。燃えるような色の婚姻色で、雄は雌に「熱い思ひ」を伝えることができるのでしょうか。
The Eurasian Wigeon is about 48 cm in length and breeds in the tundra regions of northern Eurasia. Its wintering grounds are widely scattered across Europe, northern Africa, northern India, and East Asia. In Japan, it appears as a winter visitor from early October to late March, inhabiting lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. Its overall plumage is brown, and males are easily distinguished from other ducks by their bright reddish-brown heads and creamy foreheads. Their quiet habit of drifting across calm winter waters while grazing on aquatic plants is a characteristic sight of the season.
The Japanese name Hidorigamo derives from the bird’s head coloration—hiiro (scarlet) gives rise to the characters “緋鳥鴨.” Although many animals bear color terms in their names, the use of hiiro is rare. Hiiro is a yellow-tinged red, translated into English as scarlet, yet the meanings implied by the two words differ significantly.
In English literature, as seen in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet, scarlet symbolizes sin or moral transgression. In contrast, the Japanese hiiro symbolizes nobility, passion, and life, and since the Heian period has been used metaphorically to express “burning, fervent emotion.”
Around December, the Eurasian Wigeon begins its search for a mate. The male attracts females with a clear, whistling call—a high, flute-like “fiih” note—and emphasizes his bright plumage by leaning his body forward and sharply flicking his head backward in a graceful arc. One wonders whether, with his fiery nuptial colors, the male truly succeeds in conveying his own “burning feelings” to the female.
