Collectors Captivated by the Tortoise’s Unique Patterns

最大甲長は約15cm。マダガスカル固有のクモノスガメの亜種の一つで、背甲には蜘蛛の巣のような繊細な模様が広がり、腹甲は明るい黄色を帯びています。その美しい模様が名の由来であり、同時に多くの人々を惹きつけてきました。腹甲の前部は蝶番のように可動し、頭や前脚を甲羅の中に引き込んで身を守ることができます。

クモノスガメには3つの亜種が知られており、それぞれマダガスカルの異なる地域に生息します。本亜種は南西部の海岸沿いの草原や森林に分布し、3亜種の中でも最も分布域が広く、基亜種とされています。

マダガスカルに生息するリクガメは、クモノスガメ（Pyxis arachnoides）、ヒラオリクガメ（Pyxis planicauda）、ホウシャガメ（Astrochelys radiata）、ヘサキリクガメ（Astrochelys yniphora）の4種すべてが固有種です。いずれもIUCNの評価で絶滅危惧IA類（CR）に指定され、ワシントン条約附属書Iにも掲載されています。

しかし、希少で美しい甲羅模様はコレクターたちの興味を集め、密猟や違法取引が後を絶ちません。日本では2007年から2018年の間に、合計78件・1161匹もの動物が違法輸入として税関により差し止められています。その多くは爬虫類であり、特にカメ類が約3分の2を占めます。マダガスカルをはじめとする世界各地で、小型リクガメが人の欲望によって数を減らしている現実を、私たちは直視しなければなりません。

The maximum shell length reaches about 15 cm. This subspecies of the Spider Tortoise, endemic to Madagascar, is named for the delicate web-like pattern spread across its carapace and the bright yellow hue of its plastron. Its striking appearance has long captivated many people. The front part of the plastron is hinged, allowing the tortoise to close itself tightly inside the shell to protect its head and forelimbs.

Three subspecies of the Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides) are known, each inhabiting a different region of Madagascar. This particular subspecies is distributed along the coastal grasslands and forests of the island’s southwest and is regarded as the nominate form due to its wide range.

Madagascar is home to four endemic tortoise species — the Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides), the Flat-tailed Tortoise (Pyxis planicauda), the Radiated Tortoise (Astrochelys radiata), and the Ploughshare Tortoise (Astrochelys yniphora). All four are listed as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN and are included in Appendix I of CITES.

However, the rarity and exquisite shell patterns of these tortoises have made them highly sought after by collectors, leading to persistent poaching and illegal trade. Between 2007 and 2018, Japanese customs authorities intercepted 78 cases involving a total of 1,161 illegally imported animals. Most were reptiles, and turtles accounted for about two-thirds of them. Across Madagascar and many parts of the world, small land tortoises are declining in number under the weight of human desire — a reality we can no longer ignore.
