The Rescued Tortoises That Can Never Return Home
マダガスカル固有のリクガメです。甲長は約40cm。背甲は高く盛り上がったドーム状をなし、腹甲の頭部寄りにある「喉甲板（こうこうばん）」が船の舳先（へさき）のように前方へ突き出していることから、この名が付きました。オスではこの喉甲板が特に発達し、頭部の保護だけでなく、闘争の際に相手をひっくり返すためにも使われます。
生息域はマダガスカル北西部、バリ湾周辺のわずか25〜60平方キロメートルほどの範囲に限られています。野生個体数は約400頭と推定され、IUCNレッドリストでは絶滅危惧IA類（Critically Endangered）に指定されています。生息地の減少、火災、密猟などにより生息数は著しく減少しており、近年では国際的な保護活動が急務とされています。
2013年には、タイのバンコク国際空港で密輸未遂のヘサキリクガメ54頭が押収されました。この数は当時の野生個体数の1割以上に相当します。ワシントン条約により国際取引は禁止されていますが、違法取引は後を絶ちません。押収された動物は通常、押収国の保護施設で飼育されますが、原産地への返還が難しいのは、現地に存在しない細菌やウイルス、寄生虫などを持ち込むおそれがあるためです。タイで押収された個体のうち、約半数はその後、原因不明の疾患で死亡したと報告されています。
Endemic to Madagascar, this tortoise grows to about 40 cm in shell length. Its high-domed carapace and the forward-projecting “gular scute” on the plastron, resembling the prow of a ship, give the species its name. In males, the gular scute is especially pronounced, serving not only to protect the head but also as a weapon for overturning rivals during combat.
Its natural range is limited to a small area of 25–60 square kilometers around Baly Bay in northwestern Madagascar. The total wild population is estimated at roughly 400 individuals, and the species is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss, wildfires, and poaching have caused a drastic decline, making international conservation efforts increasingly urgent.
In 2013, 54 Ploughshare Tortoises were seized at Bangkok International Airport during an attempted smuggling operation—representing more than 10 percent of the wild population at that time. Although trade in this species is strictly prohibited under CITES, illegal trafficking continues. Confiscated animals are usually kept in protective facilities within the country of seizure rather than being repatriated, as returning them to their native range could introduce unfamiliar pathogens or parasites. Reports indicate that about half of the 54 tortoises seized in Thailand later died of unknown causes.
