Pyxis arachnoides arachnoides

最大甲長は約15cm。マダガスカル固有のクモノスガメの亜種の一つで、背甲には蜘蛛の巣のような模様があり、腹甲が黄色いことからその名がつきました。腹甲の前部は蝶番のように可動し、頭や前足を甲羅の中に引き込んで身を守ることができます。クモノスガメには3つの亜種が知られており、それぞれマダガスカルの異なる地域に生息しています。本亜種は南西部の海岸沿いの草原や森林に分布し、3亜種の中でも最も分布域が広く、基亜種とされています。

マダガスカルに生息するリクガメは4種で、いずれも固有種です。クモノスガメ（Pyxis arachnoides）、ヒラオリクガメ（Pyxis planicauda）、ホウシャガメ（Astrochelys radiata）、ヘサキリクガメ（Astrochelys yniphora）の4種はいずれもIUCNの評価で絶滅危惧IA類（CR）に指定され、ワシントン条約附属書Iにも掲載されています。それにもかかわらず、希少性から高値で取引されるため、密猟が後を絶ちません。

日本では2007年から2018年の間に、合計78件・1161匹の動物が違法輸入として税関により差し止められています。密輸される動物の多くは爬虫類であり、その中でもカメ類が約3分の2を占めています。マダガスカルをはじめ、世界中の多くの小型リクガメが乱獲によって数を減らしています。その背景には、エキゾチックペットの主要消費国の一つである日本の存在があることを、私たちは認識しなければなりません。

Its maximum carapace length is approximately 15cm. It is one of the subspecies of spider turtles endemic to Madagascar, and is named for the spider web-like pattern on its carapace and its yellow plastron. The front of the plastron is hinged, allowing it to protect itself by retracting its head and front legs into the shell. There are three known subspecies of spider turtles, each living in a different region of Madagascar. This subspecies is found in grasslands and forests along the southwestern coast, and has the widest distribution of the three subspecies, making it considered the basal subspecies.

There are four species of tortoises living in Madagascar, all of which are endemic. Four species of tortoises—the Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides), Flat-tailed Tortoise (Pyxis planicauda), Radiated Tortoise (Astrochelys radiata), and Ploughshare Tortoise (Astrochelys yniphora)—are listed as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN and in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Despite this, their rarity drives high prices, leading to continued poaching.

In Japan, between 2007 and 2018, a total of 78 cases involving 1,161 animals were intercepted by customs for illegal import. The majority of smuggled animals were reptiles, with turtles accounting for approximately two-thirds of these. Overfishing is causing declines in the populations of many small tortoises around the world, including Madagascar. We must recognize that Japan, one of the world’s leading consumers of exotic pets, is behind this trend.
