Podargus strigoides (Latham, 1801)

擬態上手で巣作り下手な変わり者
An oddball who is good at mimicry but bad at building nests

体長30 – 50cm。オーストラリアの固有種であり、フクロウに似ていますが、ヨタカの仲間です。脚がフクロウよりも華奢で、フクロウのように獲物を捕らえるのには適していません。特徴的なのはいるガマ口のように大きく開く口で、和名や英名の由来にもなっています。

日中は身体を伸ばしてほとんど動かず、樹皮のような羽模様なのでまるで樹木のように見えます。擬態は防御のためであり、獲物を捕まえるためでもあります。夜間は昆虫、カタツムリ、カエルなどの小動物が近くに来るのを見張り、急降下して木のとまり木から素早く飛ぶことによって獲物を捕まえます。また、蛾のような飛んでいる昆虫を大きな口で空中で捕まえようとすることもあります。

彼らは伴侶を見つけると生涯にわたって同じペアで暮らし、離れることはありません。繁殖時には木の枝や葉で巣をつくりますが、決して上手とは言えない出来栄えだそうです。外敵に巣を突かれることもあり、クチバシを使って抵抗しますが最終的には糞尿をスプレーすることで撃退します。これは特にヘビ、トカゲなど嗅覚に依存する外敵を混乱させ、臭いが消えるまでに数週間かかるそうです。

It is endemic to Australia and is similar to an owl, but is actually a member of the nightjar family. Its legs are more delicate than those of an owl and are not suited to capturing prey like an owl. Its distinctive feature is its wide-open mouth, which gives it its Japanese and English names.

During the day, it stretches out and barely moves, and its bark-like feathers give it the appearance of a tree. Its camouflage is for both defense and catching prey. At night, it watches for approaching small animals such as insects, snails, and frogs, swooping down and flying quickly from its perch to catch prey. It will also attempt to catch flying insects like moths in mid-air with its large mouth.

Once they find a mate, they stay with the same pair for life and never separate. For breeding, they build nests out of tree branches and leaves, but the construction is said to be quite unskillful. Their nests may be pecked at by predators, and they will fight back using their beaks, but ultimately repel them by spraying feces and urine. This confuses predators that rely on their sense of smell, especially snakes and lizards, and the smell takes several weeks to dissipate.
