身体能力に優れた最大のカンガルー
The largest and strongest kangaroo

カンガルーで最大種であり、体長はオス130 – 160cm、メス85 – 105cmで、メスよりもオスの方が大きく成長します。オスには胸や前足、脇などから赤い液を出す分泌腺があり、興奮したり発情したりというような際に多く出し、体毛が赤褐色に染まります。

何よりも跳躍力に優れ、ホッピングと呼ばれる両足を使ったジャンプで、約8 – 9mの幅跳びができ、時速60km以上にも達する速さで走行することもできます。また、太く長く筋肉質の尾は跳躍時にバランスをとったり、威嚇や攻撃時に体を支える第３の足となります。

大型のオス同士は両手を器用に繰り出して殴り合うボクシングを行います。特に顕著なのは発情期で、雄は雌に寄り添い交尾の時機を伺いながら、周囲から近づく別の雄を攻撃するようになります。この際、上半身を大きく見せるディスプレイを行い、それでも勝負が付かない場合には殴り合いとなります。

カンガルーはエミューとともにオーストラリアの国章に描かれています。カンガルーは体の構造上後ろに下がることができないので、「前進あるのみ」との意味を込められています。

This is the largest species of kangaroo, with males reaching lengths of 130-160cm and females 85-105cm, with males growing larger than females. Males have glands that secrete a red fluid from their chest, front legs, and armpits. When excited or in heat, they secrete more, staining their fur a reddish-brown.

Above all, they have excellent jumping ability, capable of long jumps of approximately 8-9m using both feet in a technique known as hopping, and can also run at speeds of over 60km/h. Their long, thick, muscular tails provide balance during jumps and act as a third leg to support their bodies when intimidating or attacking.

Large males engage in boxing, skillfully using both hands to punch each other. This is particularly noticeable during the heat season, when males stay close to females, waiting for the right opportunity to mate, while also attacking other males that approach from the surrounding area. During this time, they display their upper bodies to make them look larger, and if the fight still fails, they engage in a fistfight.

Kangaroos, along with emus, are depicted on the Australian coat of arms. Kangaroos are unable to move backwards due to their physical structure, so the symbolism of “only moving forward” is included.
